Capacity is the constraint people miss

A villa advertised with air conditioning in every room may still have a connection that cannot run them simultaneously. The symptom is a breaker that trips on hot evenings, and the fix is a capacity upgrade you pay for, not a cheaper appliance. Ask for the VA rating on the meter box and compare it against what’s actually installed — AC units, pumps, kitchen equipment — before you sign, not after the first blackout.

Capacity and consumption are billed separately. A higher VA connection does not itself cost more per kWh at the top end — 3,500 VA and 6,600 VA and above share the same 2026 rate — but a low-capacity connection with heavy appliances will trip constantly no matter how the bill is calculated.

Rates below are PLN’s 2026 non-subsidised residential schedule, reported unchanged through the third quarter of 2026 — confirm the current rate for your connection via the PLN Mobile app, since government tariff decisions can change.

PLN is the only supplier — there is no plan to shop around for

PLN is Indonesia’s state electricity utility and the sole supplier; there is no competing retailer to switch to if you dislike the rate or the service. The only real choices are the connection’s VA capacity and whether billing runs prepaid or postpaid — both of which you can change, at a cost, but neither of which involves picking a different company.

The PLN Mobile app also keeps a rolling history of token purchases or invoice amounts, which is the fastest way to sanity-check what a landlord tells you about a property’s past bills — ask to see the last three months of that history rather than accept a verbal estimate.

Upgrading capacity

An upgrade (tambah daya) is applied for through the PLN Mobile app or in person, and it carries a one-off connection fee that rises with the jump in capacity — reported at roughly IDR 374,800 for 900 to 1,300 VA and about IDR 843,300 for 1,300 to 2,200 VA. PLN periodically runs discount promotions, sometimes cutting the fee by half for a limited window, but these are promotional and not something to plan a budget around.

If you rent rather than own, the upgrade is the landlord’s asset, not yours — get it agreed and paid for before you move in, since a landlord has little incentive to fund an upgrade for a tenant who might leave in a year.

Prepaid tokens versus postpaid billing

Most villas run prepaid, where you buy a token (pulsa) in a fixed Rupiah amount and load it into the meter — no bill, no arrears, but no grace period either: the power cuts out the moment the balance hits zero. Postpaid accounts get a monthly invoice and a refundable subscription deposit, and are more common on older or larger commercial-style connections.

  • Ask whether the meter is prepaid or postpaid before signing.
  • Ask for the VA rating and compare it to what’s installed, not what’s advertised.
  • If prepaid, ask how the previous tenant managed top-ups — a villa with a habit of running out at 11pm is a real inconvenience.
  • A backup generator (genset) is common in villas that have had outages; ask if there is one and whether it’s included.

Common questions

Is electricity expensive in Bali?

Per kWh it is moderate — roughly IDR 1,352 to IDR 1,699.53 depending on capacity in 2026. The bills feel large because air conditioning and pool pumps run constantly, not because the rate itself is high.

How do I know what VA capacity my villa has?

The rating is printed on the meter box, and it can also be checked through the PLN Mobile app once the account is linked. Compare it against what’s actually installed before you rely on it.

How much does it cost to upgrade PLN capacity?

Reported examples for 2026 run about IDR 374,800 from 900 to 1,300 VA and IDR 843,300 from 1,300 to 2,200 VA, plus a deposit on postpaid accounts. PLN’s periodic discount promotions can cut this, but check current pricing in the app rather than assume a promo applies.

What’s the difference between prepaid and postpaid electricity in Bali?

Prepaid uses tokens you buy in advance and load into the meter, with power cutting out at zero balance. Postpaid bills monthly and requires a refundable deposit. Most villas are prepaid.

Are power outages common in Bali?

They happen, particularly in the wet season and in less developed areas, which is why many villas keep a backup generator. Ask whether the property has one rather than assuming supply is uninterrupted.

Can I switch to a different electricity provider in Bali?

No. PLN is the only supplier in Indonesia. The choices available to you are the connection’s VA capacity and prepaid versus postpaid billing, not a competing retailer.
